(f. 1959) debuterte som forfatter i 1983 og har skrevet rundt 30 bøker for både barn og voksne. Hun har blitt tildelt en rekke priser, deriblant Gyldendalprisen i 2011 for sitt samlede forfatterskap og Kritikerprisen 2012 for Leve posthornet! I 2014 mottok hun Brages hederspris. I 2016 ble hun nominert til Nordisk råds litteraturpris for romanen Arv og miljø. Flere av Hjorths romaner er oversatt til tysk.
